Bumpity bump – books!

This blog isn’t dead yet, if you were wondering – I usually try to squeeze in a blog post every weekend or so, but lately some things have been getting in my way:

  1. I realize that I’m always out on the weekends: getting lost in libraries or visiting my grandmother,
  2. To write a blog post, I usually take out an entire afternoon because I write it all in one go, or else I start procrastinating.
  3. I keep listening to the same bands and musicians, because they’re too damned awesome and I can’t help it.

I went to the library for an overdue literary binge (read: pretentious reading material) and ended up borrowing way more than I could digest, which amused my mum very much. I finally got my hands on the last two books of Yukio Mishima‘s Sea Of Fertility tetra- logy (The Temple Of Dawn and The Decay Of The Angel, along with Fyodor Dostoevsky‘s Notes From Underground and Franz Kafka‘s Amerika. I’ve also got Patrick Modiano‘s Honeymoon which had a lovely cover that reminded me of Rene Magritte’s work for some reason, I don’t know what it’s about yet though.

I also ended up with Junichiro Tanizaki‘s The Diary Of A Mad Old Man, which is about an old Japanese man who harbours less-than-healthy thoughts of his bodacious sister-in-law. There was also Walter Moers‘s lovely ode to Gustave Dore, a 19th-century artist of the Romantic era, titled A Wild Ride Through The Night. I’m mowing slowly through Notes From Underground and it’s not an easy read although it’s less than 200 pages. It speaks of humankind’s favourite pasttime for self-destruction and self-loathing, even though we know it brings nothing but pain. We’re just weird that way…
